Rib Ticklers Comedy Club Review – by John Richards

Thursday 11th November 2010

So, the first night of the Rib Ticklers Comedy Club at the Fox & Hounds in Tytherington. The Fox & Hounds is well versed in staging comedy gigs, with a back room holding an audience of up to 100 people.

Rib Ticklers Comedy Club had assembled a cracking line-up for opening night and first up was compere Sally-Ann Hayward. A great choice to anchor the evening, Sally-Ann immediately sized up the audience, found a few choice morsels in the front two rows and had us all in stitches from the off. Mixing up her observational comedy with great off-the-cuff stuff based on what she was getting from her victims – I mean subjects – in the audience, she set the bar very high indeed – returning in between the other acts to continue her merciless hounding.

Next up was comedy hobbit (I’m sure he used this description!) Tiernan Douieb. Riffing on the advantages and disadvantages of his diminutive stature, his love of music and scathing opinions of people “who love everything” when it comes to music, Tiernan was a really engaging comic. We loved the gag about putting a jam jar on a cat’s head to make a feline astronaut.

We then had a 10-minute extra guest slot from Andrew Watts. And talk about leaving the audience wanting more! Combining what seemed to be the personas of a public schoolboy, absent-minded doctor and borderline psychopath, Andrew’s surreal musings about going on dates and trying to find a girlfriend had me holding onto my aching sides as his whispered, fast-paced delivery went on increasingly bizarre flights of fantasy. Get him back for a longer set, please!

Finally, we had the stand-up legend Bob Mills. I last saw Bob about 12 years ago, and he has grown not only in girth but also in his control of the audience. From the minute he walked out on stage, he had us eating out of his hand. Even with well-worn material such as how far Tytherington is from civilization, his timing was impeccable. He wasn’t afraid to walk the line with controversial topics, and the etiquette of terrorist bombers has never been so amusing!

All in all, a fantastic first night at Rib Ticklers, we’ll most definitely be coming again!

Came to see your comedy night on the 20th January and it was absolutely side splitting… we all left aching from laughter, well needed to subside those January blues. Thanks for squeezing us in last minute, we can’t wait for the next one!
